Renowned Actor Sarmad Sultan Khoosat Engages Lahore Audience in Powerful Discussion on ‘Zindagi Tamasha’

On the 4th of July, 2024, the Central Defense Public Library (DPL) in Lahore was abuzz with anticipation as people from various walks of life gathered for a talk and Q&A session with the esteemed actor, director, producer, and writer, Sarmad Sultan Khoosat. The event promised an insightful dive into Khoosat’s controversial and thought-provoking film “Zindagi Tamasha,” and it did not disappoint.

The session titled “Deconstructing Zindagi Tamasha” quickly evolved into an engaging and interactive discussion, capturing the enthusiasm and active participation of all attendees. The atmosphere was charged with intellectual curiosity as Khoosat began to unravel the film’s themes, which include religious bigotry, hypocrisy, and the double standards that permeate society.

“Zindagi Tamasha,” a film that has stirred significant debate since its inception, served as the perfect catalyst for this discourse. Khoosat meticulously deconstructed the narrative, shedding light on the intricate portrayal of societal flaws. He discussed how the film highlights the struggles of an ordinary man caught in the crossfire of societal judgment and religious intolerance. This man’s story, marred by the community’s harsh scrutiny, becomes a mirror reflecting the prejudices that afflict our collective consciousness.

The conversation naturally extended to Khoosat’s personal experiences and the challenges he faced in bringing “Zindagi Tamasha” to the screen. He spoke candidly about the backlash and obstacles that arose post-completion of the movie, emphasizing the resilience required to withstand such trials. This transparency resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom were moved by his unwavering commitment to his art and message.

Throughout the session, several thought-provoking points were raised. The dialogue ventured into possible solutions for mitigating the societal issues depicted in the film. Attendees actively contributed, sharing their perspectives and ideas for fostering a more inclusive and understanding society. The exchange of ideas highlighted a collective yearning for change and underscored the power of cinema as a medium for social commentary and reform.

The diverse audience, ranging from students and academics to artists and professionals, ensured a rich tapestry of viewpoints. This variety enriched the discussion, allowing for a multi-faceted exploration of the themes at hand. The event not only showcased Khoosat’s brilliance as a filmmaker but also his prowess as a thought leader capable of inspiring critical reflection and dialogue.

As the session drew to a close, the palpable sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the attendees was a testament to the impact of Khoosat’s work and words. The talk at DPL Lahore was more than just an exploration of a film; it was a powerful reminder of the arts’ role in challenging the status quo and igniting meaningful conversations.

In order to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which library members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth, DPL has initiated a workshop in collaboration with the International Public Speaking Club; the Toast Masters International. This workshop will be held at DPL Seminar Room once a month and will be free of cost to all library members. The objective of this workshop is to provide members an opportunity to practice their speaking skills in front of a group. To accomplish this, each member is scheduled to perform various duties. Some of these include:-

  • Speaker (Prepared topics)
  • Speaker (Impromptu topics)
  • Evaluator
  • Table topic discussions
  • Grammarian
  • Joke Master

Table Topics  One of the most challenging elements of communication is impromptu speaking. Table Topics offers the ongoing challenge to speak in front of a group without preparation. Members are called to the front of the room to spontaneously comment on a subject that is provided by the Table Topics Master for the day.

Prepared Speeches  Each member is scheduled in advance every other month or so to prepare and deliver a prepared speech of 5 to 15 minutes. Formal Evaluations  One of the most rewarding elements in Toastmasters forum is to deliver a speech and than get evaluated in a supportive environment. An evaluator typically congratulates the speaker on a job well done, points out several areas of the speech that were performed well and offers 2 or 3 areas to improve upon. At the end of each meeting, attendees vote for who they felt did the best job at presenting a Table Topic, Prepared Speech and Formal Evaluation. This keeps things competitive and interesting for all members. It also gives newcomers to the club something to strive for. The first workshop in this regard was held at DPL on 23rd June 24 from 1430-1630 hrs. in which members participated wholeheartedly with zeal and enthusiasm.
